Project Lifesaver is a program for individuals with cognitive disabilities such as autism, Dementia, Alzheimer's, or traumatic brain injury who have a history of wandering from home. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office program is a collaboration with Project Lifesaver International (PLI), a non-profit that was established in 1999 that locates individuals gone wandering. PLI is widely used throughout the United States.
PLI is in a constant state of research and development to ensure the latest and most effective technologies are being utilized by the program both in the prevention of wandering and the recovery of a client in the event of elopement.
PLI has strategically designed methods and techniques for the specific use of recovering individuals with a cognitive condition. When applied by first responders these innovative strategies enable the most efficient rescue of an eloped client.
PLI provides first responders with a basic understanding of cognitive conditions, giving them the necessary tools needed to respond to an elopement and to assess and effectively manage the safe and comfortable return of an eloped client.
The necessity of this program was determined through the correlation between cognitive conditions and the act of wandering. With the dramatic increase of cognitive conditions since the inception of the organization, the program has grown from a localized program to a program recognized internationally as a proven and effective method of “bringing loved ones home.”
As a caregiver of an individual with the propensity to wander, before an elopement occurs, the first measure of safety to take is wandering prevention. To learn how you can prevent your loved one from wandering, Project Lifesaver has provided these helpful tools and resources for you.
